There are six elementary, three middle and three high schools in the city, all operated by Independent School District 196. Apple Valley High School and Eastview High School are Apple Valley's two comprehensive high schools but Apple Valley is also home to The School of Environmental Studies, which focuses on sciences, especially environmental sciences. In fall 2007, the district also opened three elementary school-level magnet schools, Cedar Park Elementary, focusuing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math magnet, Diamond Path Elementary, focusing on International Studies, Glacier Hills Elementary, focusing on Arts and Science. Apple Valley's District 196 is proud to announce that two of its own teaches were nominated for 2008 Minnesota Teacher of the Year on January 30, 2008. The district also boasts that its Class of 2007 high school students scored well above state and national average composite scores on the American College Test (ACT) in August 2007. With its location within the Twin Cities, post-secondary education is easily accessible to Apple Valley residents within close proximity to the College of Saint Catherine-Saint Paul Campus, St. Paul Technical College, and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
